Frequently Asked Questions

  • Increased Regional Visitors
Expect significantly higher numbers of visitors throughout the Kansas City metro area, including Lawrence and Douglas County. Hotels, restaurants and attractions will see increased activity.

  • While exact travel timelines vary by team and fan base, anticipate increased fan activity approximately two weeks before Team Algeria’s first match at Kansas City Stadium on June 16. Team arrivals are typically closer to their match dates, but fan travel can begin earlier as visitors plan extended stays to explore the region and participate in events.

Because the Kansas City region will be welcoming fans of all four teams base camped there — along with supporters of additional teams who may be playing matches at Kansas City Stadium — Lawrence 2026 is preparing for a large and diverse international audience of soccer fans, some of whom may have saved their entire lives to travel to support their team near even one match.

    • Highway Traffic: I-70 and other major routes to Kansas City will experience heavier than normal congestion during match days

    • Local Impact: Increased traffic through Lawrence as visitors travel between Kansas City and other regional attractions

    • Plan Ahead: Consider adjusting your commute times or routes on match days.

  • Police, fire, medical, and all essential city services will be operational throughout the tournament. This includes:

    • utility services

    • trash and recycling pickup

    • emergency dispatch

  • All official match tickets are sold directly through FIFA.

Earlier this year, FIFA hosted a global lottery-style application process that drew extremely high demand, with millions of requests submitted worldwide. There are currently tickets available on resale sites, but in those cases, there is not the same level of strict oversight, so buyer beware.

  • That decision is made at the individual restaurant level.

The Lawrence Restaurant Association is currently exploring best practices and guidance for local businesses as we prepare to welcome an influx of visitors. We’ll share more information as those conversations develop.

  • The Algerian team of professional athletes has expressed a preference for a quieter arrival into Lawrence for security and preparation purposes, and we respect that.

There will be community-wide kickoff events and opportunities to celebrate the World Cup together, and we encourage residents to participate in those shared experiences.

  • You can sign up to express interest in volunteering by clicking here.

Due to the level of interest, not everyone who signs up will be selected for a volunteer role. We encourage you to complete the form and stay engaged as additional opportunities may become available.

  • No — Sports Pavilion Lawrence will remain open and accessible to the community.

As we welcome an international team to our community, we’re focused on balancing access, safety, and a strong sense of hospitality. We appreciate everyone’s partnership in creating a welcoming and respectful environment.
